Goodbye June

There are a lot of different things I could have written about tonight, and I decided to go with the fact that June is ending. It does seem as though the month just started and in just a few short hours it will be over. And with the end of June comes the halfway point in my summer. I’ve already been home almost two months, and before I know it I’ll be back at UCONN. It’s crazy to think that so much of my summer has gone by, and to think about everything that I’ve done.

Since coming home in May I’ve started my internship, caught up with friends, spent time with family and taken on babysitting and plant sitting jobs. Summer’s been great so far even if the weather has been a little back and forth between good and bad. And there are so many more things the summer holds for me to look forward to. More beach trips, seeing my friends who have been abroad and lots and lots of fun. Summer might be halfway gone but it’s been great, and I can’t wait to see what the next two months hold.

I Had a Brilliant Plan and I Forgot It

Yesterday I came up with a brilliant plan for the blog post I was going to write today. I was really excited about it and today I managed to completely forget what it was. Which is a little disappointing. I know that it had to do with writing and that’s all I know. So today there is no exciting blog post; there is just this slightly sad and disappointed blog post. This is what I get for not writing down my ideas when I come up with them. I should probably try to work on that. And for today that’s it, unless I remember my brilliant plan.

Friday Fun: Kid Movies

Finally a Friday Fun post on a Friday! (Crazy, I know.) Tonight I decided to write about little kid movies, one of my favorite movie genres. I’m sure to some that sounds a little crazy, given that I’m well past the age of the target audience for those movies, but I love them all the same. I like being able to kick back and just enjoy a movie for the sake of a movie and not look for a deeper meaning. And what I’m really excited about this summer is the fact that the new Despicable Me movie which comes out in 5 days!

Again, I’m sure it sounds crazy that I’m looking forward to this movie, but I have a soft spot for the minions. They’re really cute, they mean well and sometimes they make mistakes. And sometimes no one knows what they’re saying. And I can relate to all of that. The minions and I would understand each other if the minions were actually real.

And of course, I’m a Disney kid. I grew up on Disney movies and I love them all. I have a soft spot for the princess movies but there were a lot of other ones I like too, like Aladdin and The Aristocats.

So take time this weekend and watch a little kid movie. It’ll be fun. I promise.

Collections

Why is it that people collect things? Is it something that is engrained in them in childhood or is it something that develops over time? I’m not really sure what the correct answer is, or if there’s a correct answer, but it is something that I wonder about.

In my house we currently collect and have collected in the past a number of things. We’ve collected model Volkswagen Beetles, Madame Alexandra dolls, shoe figurines, and more recently Disney pins and Disney vinylmation figurines. At our house we collect because we want to and because it’s fun. It’s something to do and something to bond over. And I’m sure that someday we’ll have something else that we collect.

Writing Isn’t Always Easy

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I write for school, I write stories, I keep a journal, I have this blog. There is a lot of writing in my life and it’s something that I’m definitely comfortable with. I understand how to weave a story and how to put words together so that they make sense. For me that’s not hard. Actually putting it into practice sometimes is.

You would think that after all this time it would be easy. Get an idea, sit down and write. It certainly sounds simple enough. But I often find it isn’t that easy. I find that I spend a lot of time staring at a blank page wondering what word to put on the paper first. Because the fact of the matter is, the blank page is still a scary thing. (Not as scary as the seagull that stole my hotdog yesterday though.)

But even though the blank page is a scary thing, I continue to write. It’s something that I love to do and something I can’t imagine my life without. So I continue to write and I continue to struggle with the blank page. Chances are, for as long as I write the blank page will continue to scare me just a little. But so long as I don’t ever let it stop me permanently, I think everything will be OK.

Beach Adventure

I live near the beach and have for my entire life, so going to the beach during the summer is a pretty normal occurrence for me. Today my mom and I went, and we went early enough to get lunch there. Again, this is something we do regularly during the summer, and normally it wouldn’t be noteworthy. But today’s lunch was a comedy of errors and adventures. First, a seagull stole my hotdog. Yes, it swooped onto my table and stole half my hotdog. And it was an ENORMOUS seagull, so the experience was pretty terrifying. And then to make matters worse, after my mom and I moved far away from the seagull, we (with help from the wind) spilled half of our french fries. Clearly lunch was not something that was supposed to happen today.

Beyond that though the beach was great. The weather was awesome and it was great to just sit there with a book and enjoy. I’m looking forward to doing it many more times during the summer.

Being a “Native”

I’m sure that the title of this post sounds a little weird. But I live in a small town where everyone sort of knows everyone else. And the people who have lived here the longest are even related to most others. I haven’t lived here on Mystic long enough to achieve that status, but I am becoming one of those people who knows everyone else. I didn’t realize it until my internship this summer. It seems that every time I go out for an article I know at least one of the people involved. And in its own way, it’s nice. It makes doing my job a little easier, and the people who are involved always get a little excited. And it’s nice to connect more with the people I know and meet and connect with new people. So while to some it might seem a little weird, I really enjoy being a native.

Writing Inspiration

I don’t know how it works for everyone else, but I get my writing inspiration from everywhere. I get it from photos and from quotes. I get it from movies and tv. I get it from quotes and books I read and conversactions I hear. I get inspiration from everywhere.

The hope is that one day all the inspiration gets put to good use. Right now a lot of it is just hanging out and waiting for the right moment. And the right moment will come.

And of course, I will continue to gather more inspiration.

Summer is Flying By

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been home a month and a haof already. Summer in college is long, but as with everything else time seems to fly by. I’m home, my internship is going well, and life is pretty grand right now. I’m working hard and I have time to have fun, and that’s how summer should be. Soon summers won’t be as innocent and carefree as thnow are right now, and I really want to enjoy every minute if this summer while I can. Summer is a time to have fun, and that’s what I’m working on doing. But at the same time, my internship is great and I absolutely love it. All in all summer is fabulous and I have no complaints.
