My Writing Process

I feel that I so often have to say this, so I’m sorry if you’re tired of hearing it. I might have already written about this topic. If I did, I’m sorry. If you already read about this and don’t want to read it again, that’s OK. But tonight I’ve chosen to write a little bit about my writing process.

Step 1: The truth of the matter is, there is no definite step one. Sometimes an idea magically comes to me. Sometimes I’m inspired by a picture. Sometimes I’m inspired by something that I’ve read or seen. Sometimes I play the word association game and see where that takes me.

Step 2: After having an idea there are two options. I can flesh it out a little bit so I have an idea of where I’m going. Or I can jump in and write and see where that takes me. Neither option is the wrong one. It depends on the idea, how strong it is, what I think the correct choice is.

Step 3: This part is easy. I write.

You might expect that I would have elaborated more on Step 3 or that more would follow after Step 3. The truth is that for me it’s easier to come up with an idea than to follow through on one. I get distracted and move onto another idea. And I’m awful at the revision process. I tend to write things and then just file them away. It’s a habit that I need to somehow move past, but that hasn’t happened yet.

The truth of the matter is, the writing process is different for me every time with every story. Sometimes I think an idea out in my head. Sometimes I really plan it out. Sometimes it’s based around a list of words. Sometimes it’s inspired by an image. There is no right or wrong way to write a story. My process is ever changing, and I don’t think the process is the crucial part. I think that what’s important is to write. To write every day if possible, and as often as possible when it isn’t.

Lots of Rambles

There are a lot of things that I kind of want to write about, and rather than try to narrow it down to one thing to focus on I thought that maybe I would share a couple of different ideas (rambles) with you guys. I figured that that would be more fun, that it would allow for a longer post, and that it would make up a little for the posts that I missed last week. And I apologize in advance for anyone who gets lost in the rambles/wishes I had just picked one topic for tonight’s post. Sometimes that’s just asking too much.

First Ramble:

I don’t think I’ve yet shared with all of you my love for fun socks. I don’t like to wear plain white socks. I happen to find it incredibly boring, especially when you look at all the fun socks that are out there (at least for girls.) So rather than buy white socks I buy fun socks. I have socks that look like composition notebooks, pencils, binder paper. I have socks with smiley faces, mustaches, hearts, polka dots and zebra stripes. I have a pair of neon melon socks. And I love them all. I buy my fun socks in bulk at Target or at Kohl’s, and sometimes the fun socks magically appear in care packages. My friends and family sometimes make fun of me for my love of the fun socks, but I’m ok with that. They make me happy, and sometimes that’s what matters.

Second Ramble:

In entirely different news, I’m hoping to do something exciting in the next month. As you all know, tomorrow is October 1. And while I’ve been working to add white space to the blog and categorize and tag my posts, I haven’t added visuals yet. So my goal for October is to post a graphic everyday. Some of them I’m hoping will be pictures that I’ve taken and some I’ll probably borrow and credit to Pinterest. I’m hoping that I can actually stick with this, and that you all enjoy the images.

Third Ramble:

Apparently I didn’t have as many rambles stored up as I thought I did. (I’ll save my love of Halloween for another day.) So if you read through my not so rambley ramble post, thank you. If you’re still reading this blog share with your friends. Or share with me that you like what you’re reading (or, maybe, don’t like what you’re reading.) Keep in touch. I’ll write back.
